Chapter Eleven

Reese was standing in front of the mirror, dressed for dinner. He could only imagine what his reflection looked like. A black pit as dark as night sill surrounded him.

He’d talked his dinner experiment over with Betty and she volunteered to lay out his clothes; the dark charcoal gray suit, light grey vest, white shirt and the black onyx and diamond studded bolo tie. She’d place his dress black leather boots to the side of the bed as well.

Reese rubbed his chin and smiled as he thought back on the excursion of earlier that day. Delilah drove him to his barber in town and she talked him into having the barber trim and edge his 3-day stubble. Reese hadn’t worn a beard since his college days but he was willing to for Delilah. In additional to monitoring his shave, she fussed over his haircut until it was exactly to her liking. He ran a hand thought his freshly shorn hair while pushing back the slight tumble of nerves. Though she dismissed their kiss, Reese couldn’t get it, or her, out of his head.

Delilah checked herself once more in the full-length mirror. She was wearing a burgundy lace evening dress, thin strapped silver satin sandals, and she had her hair in a messy chignon updo. Jewelry sparkled from her wrist, earlobes, and neck, and the image looking back at her from the mirror was shockingly gorgeous. “It’s been a long time.” she said to herself as she primped. “I can’t remember looking this good since Ben.” Which meant she hadn’t been this dressed up in a very long time.

Reese was waiting for Delilah in the living room and he stood when he heard her come in. Delilah was literally stopped in her tracks. She’d never seen him so strikingly handsome before. The smell of him, a citrus woodiness filled her nostrils and warmed her to her toes.

“You smell like flowers.” he said.

Though she had stopped a few feet from him, it still felt too close. “It’s the perfume.” she said.

He nodded. He wanted to ask her what she was wearing, the color and the fabric, the type of jewelry she had on and if her hair was up or spread over her shoulders like a waterfall. He wanted to create a full-fledged image of her in his head, something he could pull up and see throughout the evening, but he reminded himself that wasn’t possible, and this...wasn’t a date. It was a test to determine if he could navigate his way through an exclusive restaurant meal.

The silence hung between them and the air became heavy and slightly electric as they both struggled a bit to breathe.

“We have reservations Reese,” she said trying to bring some control to the moment.

“You’re right.” he said holding out his hand. She hesitated a moment then she crossed the room and placed her hand in his. He let himself rub his thumb across the back of her hand for the briefest moment, savoring the innocent contact.
